⁕ Design for a happy world: My principles

Design is a powerful tool. It can influence how people, businesses and governments think and act. I believe that all designers have the responsibility to contribute to a happier world by making sure the impact of our work does no harm to people and the planet. I made a little website around this topic and personally follow these two simple principles:

Principle 1.

I won’t work for the bad guys

‘Good’ and ‘bad’ are of course relative terms, but there are a few industries that cause more harm than good by default. I won’t accept work from any of these industries and might say ‘no’ to other work if I genuinely believe it does no good.

Fossil fuels
Mining
Fast fashion
Meat, Fish
Defence, Weapons
Tobacco

Principle 2.

I’ll be extra nice to the good guys

I offer a 20% discount and free advice to charities, social and environmental projects and other initiatives whose primary aim is to create a positive impact.

In addition I’m a member of 1% For The Planet, meaning I will donate at least 1% of my annual revenue to environmental causes - my first year’s donation will go to Client Earth.
